As a mom-to-be, taking care of yourself is important for a smoother pregnancy and a healthy baby. So here are a few tips for you!
- Consume a well-balanced diet and stay hydrated: Pregnant women must consume homemade food that is low in sugar and fats. This will limit the risk of gestational diabetes and ensure you do not gain excess weight. Your diet must include fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole-grains to ensure you’re getting all the required nutrients. Do not skip the vitamin and mineral supplements recommended by your doctor as these are very important for your well-being and your baby’s growth. Drink lots of water and other fluids and stay hydrated.
- Don’t ignore your fitness: Exercise is important during pregnancy too! It helps in strengthening muscles and prevents excess weight gain. Stay active at least for 30 minutes a day. Choose any form of exercise you like – yoga, walking, aerobics, etc. A lot of fitness centres and hospitals have exercise programs specifically for pregnant women. Consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine.
- Get Adequate Rest: Set a bedtime routine and sleep well. Take rest whenever you can. Consider your sleeping position as well. Pregnant women in the third trimester are advised to sleep on their left side to ensure adequate blood flow to the fetus.
- Don’t ignore your emotional health: Your mental health also plays an important role in pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones can cause a lot of mood swings. So stay away from things that stress you out. Practice yoga, meditation or any other activity that relaxes you.
- Educate yourself: Join pregnancy groups, subscribe to pregnancy blogs or attend childbirth classes. You can never be ready for your delivery, but at least you’ll know what to expect. Share your journey with other mommies-to-be and contact your doctor immediately in case of any concerns.
