TOEFL: All About The Exam And Study Tips!!

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test is the internationally accepted English-language test. It is recognized by reputed universities in 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. Irrespective of which English Speaking country you wish to pursue your studies in, the TOEFL test one of the requirements to get there.

Modes of taking the Exam: The TOEFL can be taken in two forms – the Internet Based Test (iBT) or the TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test. You can choose the format you prefer. However, 98% of students take the test in the iBT format. For iBT, make sure you practice typing at least for 15 to 20 mins every day to complete the test within the provided time.

Registration Fees: $180 which would be approx. INR 13,000

Location, Center and Dates: You can choose the test location and test center close to you. 50 test dates are offered each year. The test dates can be chosen based on the availability.

Preparation tips:

Reading: In the reading section, the candidate’s ability to read and analyse the text is tested. Read as much as you can – newspapers, fiction and non-fiction books, etc. The idea here is to build your vocabulary. So don’t limit your reading to one particular niche. So read about various subjects.

Writing: One of the main areas of this section is writing an argumentative essay. Write an essay or article every day or at least alternate day. This is another way to learn sentence formation with the right structure and vocabulary. Writing every day helps in improving clarity of thought as well as speed. Additionally, practice grammar to ensure the sentences you write make sense.

Listening: To improve listening skills – listen to broadcasts, shows, music and movies in English. Get comfortable with the accent of English used abroad. You’ll also be able to improve your vocabulary and expressions.

Speaking: In the speaking test, you are required to express your opinion on specific topics and in some sections, answer questions based on the listening and reading parts. So practice speaking English with your friends. You could also record your answers on certain topics, listen to the recording and improve your pronunciation.
