Honourable Prime Minister of our nation Shri Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have been jointly awarded with the Prestigious United Nations’ ‘The Champions of the Earth‘ Award. The award is the highest environmental honour received for their work in championing the International Solar Alliance and promoting new areas of cooperation on environmental action. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also pledged to eliminate single use plastics in India by the year 2022. PM Modi and Macron are among the six of world’s outstanding environmental change makers to receive this honour.
What is the Champions of the Earth Award?
The award is the United Nation’s highest environmental recognition to celebrate exceptional personalities from the public and private sectors as well as civil society, whose actions have a positive impact on the environment.
What is the International Solar Alliance?
The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is an Indian initiative that was launched by PM Modi and French President Macron in Paris in November 2015 during the COP 21, the United Nations’ Climate Conference. The ISA is a treaty-based international body for promotion of solar energy in alliance with solar-rich countries, i.e. countries located on the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.

- Joan Carling was awarded the lifetime achievement award for her work as one of the world’s most prominent defenders of environmental and indigenous rights
- Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods have been recognized jointly for their contribution in Science and Innovation category. They developed a plant-based alternative to beef.
- Green Rural Revival Programme from Zhejiang, China has been awarded for transformation of once heavily polluted areas of rivers and stream into clean drinkable rivers.
