From playing at inter-school games to becoming India’s youngest Hockey player at 18, let’s dive deep into Lalremsiami’s journey.
Lalremsiami, fondly addressed as ‘Siami’ hails from Kolasib, Mizoram. Her family of 10 survived on income from Agriculture. She started playing Hockey in a playground near her house and that’s when a hockey coach spotted her and selected her for school games. This was the beginning of her journey.
According to Indian Express, she represented her school at an inter-school event at the age of 10 and won the title of ‘Best Hockey Player’ of the games. Her first cash award of Rs.500 came from this event.
When at the age of 11, she was selected for training in the State Government Academy at Thenzawl, Mizoram, her father’s main concern was the money they would need to pay. She dreamt of playing for Indian team the day she left for the academy, but that dream seemed too big to her family who didn’t know much beyond farming.
In 2016, she moved to the National Hockey Academy in New Delhi in 2016. During her stay at Delhi, she didn’t have enough funds even for her daily necessities sometimes. Apart from lack of funds, another struggle that Siami went was the language barrier. When she first visited Delhi, she didn’t know Hindi or English. Her team developed a method to explain her different tactics for the game using bullet points. Eventually, with the help of Mizo-Hindi dictionary, her team and specifically the team’s Captain Rani Rampal’s help, she crossed this barrier and she can now speak Hindi.
Siami played 31 minutes and scored twice in her first tournament – The Asian Champions Trophy in Korea in 2016 and bagged the ‘‘U-21 Rising Star Award’. She also represented India in the 2018 World Cup as the youngest player at the age of 18.
Siami will play at the Asian Games 2018. She dreams to win the Gold for India.
